women of greek mythology - medea (Μήδεια)

In Greek mythology, Medea was the daughter of King Aeëtes of Colchis, niece of Circe, granddaughter of the sun god Helios, and later wife to the hero Jason, with whom she had two children, Mermeros and Pheres. In Euripides’s play Medea, Jason leaves Medea when Creon, king of Corinth, offers him his daughter, Glauce. The play tells about how Medea avenges her husband’s betrayal. (+ more)

Norse Mythology: Hel

Hel is the ruler of Helheim, the realm of the dead. She is the youngest child of the god Loki and the giantess Angrboda. Her face and body are that of a living woman, but her legs are those of a corpse, mottled and moldering.

The gods had abducted Hel and her brothers from her mother’s hall. She was cast to the underworld, into which she distributes those who are sent to her; the wicked from the innocent.

She has a knife called “Famine”, a plate called “Hunger”, a bed called “Disease”, and bed curtains called “Misfortune”.

mythology meme: [1/9] Greek Gods/Goddesses → Eris

Strife whose wrath is relentless, she is the sister and companion of murderous Ares, she who is only a little thing at the first, but thereafter grows until she strides on the earth with her head striking heaven. She then hurled down bitterness equally between both sides as she walked through the onslaught making men’s pain heavier.
