so you want to swan dive into the addictive, humorous, and occasionally painful hell that is ace attorney? great. here’s what you need to know:
the first three games follow the (mis)adventures of a defense attorney named phoenix wright, who panics and bluffs his way through his trials and (somehow) stumbles over the truth.
in chronological order, they are (with rom links!):
the latest two main-series games take place a significant amount of time after the first three, and while you don’t have to know about the original trilogy for apollo justice, it definitely makes the experience more fun — especially when they drop in cute cameos or references.
(dual destinies doesn’t have a rom link, because it’s for 3ds and i don’t know if anything works for that yet.)
and then there’s three spin-off games so far — two focuse on miles edgeworth, a prosecutor and one of wright’s closest friends, and the other is a phoenix wright/professor layton crossover. it’s suggested that you play the spin-offs after playing the first three games.
(investigations 2 hasn’t been released in english yet, and i’m not 100% sure how to play it — i’ll edit this when i know. layton vs wright is for 3ds.)
vi. ace attorney investigations: miles edgeworth
vii. ace attorney investigations 2: miles edgeworth
viii. professor layton versus phoenix wright
to play these games without a ds, desmume is a great, functional ds emulator!
obviously, if you have a ds/3ds (or an iphone/ipad), buying it would be the preferable option — the first three games are available in the apple store, and all but two of the listed games are for ds. have fun in lawyer hell, i’ll see you on the other side.
