Norse Mythology: Hel

Hel is the ruler of Helheim, the realm of the dead. She is the youngest child of the god Loki and the giantess Angrboda. Her face and body are that of a living woman, but her legs are those of a corpse, mottled and moldering.

The gods had abducted Hel and her brothers from her mother’s hall. She was cast to the underworld, into which she distributes those who are sent to her; the wicked from the innocent.

She has a knife called “Famine”, a plate called “Hunger”, a bed called “Disease”, and bed curtains called “Misfortune”.
